Selection of high-level officials for international institutions
Whereas much of the legitimacy of an international organization lies in the constellation of its membership, another great part stems from its internal procedures and administration. Fair and democratic election processes of high-level officials for international institutions are thus vital, not only to avoid biased leadership but also as a symbol of democratic principles.
“WFM is working to democratize and make more transparent the election processes for Security Council members, including the selection of the UN Secretary General.”
Prior to the election of judges to the International Criminal Court (ICC), WFM strongly advocated for a fair and just election process. This may be one of the few examples of international elections with equitable representation. The ICC elections have now set a higher standard for elections of this nature. WFM will continue its efforts to ensure that such standards become an international norm in future multilateral election processes. In particular, WFM is working to democratize and make more transparent the election processes for Security Council members and high-level Secretariat appointments, including the selection of the UN Secretary General.
