International processes for democracy
The promotion of democracy at all levels of society is a prerequisite for replacing the rule of force with the rule of law. Establishing more representative and democratic decision-making processes at the national level is a prerequisite to successful international democracy. In recognizing that an international democracy is only obtainable if all participating nation-states abide by democratic principles, national democratization becomes an international issue. WFM believes that internationally coordinated efforts to facilitate the pursuit of democratic and good governance norms by non-democratic states are a necessity for a peaceful world order. In addition, WFM seeks to address the disparity among national democracies acting undemocratically at the international level.

UN International Conference for New or Restored Democracies
In September 2003, the UN International Conference on New or Restored Democracies (ICNRD) held its 5th meeting in Mongolia entitled ‘Democracy, Good Governance and Civil Society’. WFM participated in the parallel International Civil Society Forum 2003 and assisted in the establishment of the International Civil Society Forum for Democracy (ICSFD). The goal of the forums is to promote effective democratic governance reforms by strengthening civil society collaboration nationally, regionally and internationally. As a member of its Steering Committee, WFM is involved in the civil society preparations for the upcoming ICNRD/ICSFD forum in Qatar, 2006 and advocates for civil society participation in the debate about civil society’s role in new and restored democracies.
