Introduction to Promoting Rule of Law, Defending Human Rights
Coalition for the International Criminal Court

Coalition for the International Criminal Court
WFM is honored to continue to serve and provide the International Secretariat for the NGO Coalition for the International Criminal Court (CICC). CICC is a network of over 2,000 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) advocating for a fair, effective and independent International Criminal Court (ICC). WFM is thus proud to report on the establishment of the new world court with its fair and transparent election of 18 judges in February 2003. The Inauguration of the Court in The Hague, the Netherlands, was celebrated in March 2003, and as of November 2004 all senior officials were in place. By 2005, the Court was receiving several referrals and had begun its formal investigations of the atrocities in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Northern Uganda .
In providing the Secretariat of the Coalition for the International Criminal Court, WFM continues to work with legal experts to secure worldwide national ratification of the Rome Statute and the development of strong implementing legislation. Since the ICC enforces the international law of the Rome Statut on individuals, not states, the ICC represents a major advance in the rule of law and in the protection of universal human rights.
“The International Criminal Court, now fully functioning in The Hague, stands as an all-new cornerstone of world peace.”
WFM continues to work with its partners to ensure that the Court is independent, fair, and effective with appropriate mechanisms in place during its first critical years of operation and thereafter. Accordingly, CICC is monitoring and supporting the work of the Assembly of State Parties as well as the Court itself.
The CICC also serves to generate international understanding and public support for the ICC. For ten years, the CICC has been the primary source of information on the ICC and through WFM, the CICC continues to provide vital information to key governmental officials and civil society representatives at the national and international level.
The International Criminal Court, now fully functioning in The Hague, stands as an all-new cornerstone of world peace.
